When used properly, power toothbrushes can make oral hygiene much more effective — especially for tackling plaque in hard-to-reach places. There are two main types available:
These resemble a manual brush but include a powered head that oscillates and rotates, doing much of the cleaning work automatically. You still need to guide it to the gum line and apply gentle pressure, but you don’t have to make all the small brushing movements yourself. This makes brushing easier and more efficient for many patients.
Ultrasonic models use a microprocessor to produce thousands of gentle strokes per minute — often around 31,000 movements. They combine direct bristle contact with dynamic fluid action to flush away bacteria and plaque beneath the gum line and between teeth — reaching areas sometimes missed by ordinary brushes.
At Bayswater Dental Clinic, our hygienists can assess your brushing habits and recommend the right power toothbrush for your mouth — and show you how to get the most from it.
